How Kaspersky Password Manager protects your data

About your vault

A vault is an encrypted file that contains all of your accounts, notes, and other data. By default, your vault is located at: %LocalAppData%\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Password Manager

For security reasons Kaspersky Password Manager automatically blocks access to the vault after a specified period of inactivity or when the screen saver turns on. You must enter the master password to access your vault. This method of data storage keeps your valuable information safe even if your device with Kaspersky Password Manager gets lost or stolen.

About the encryption

Kaspersky Password Manager encrypts data using a symmetric key algorithm based on the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). A key is derived from your master password using Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2 (PBKDF2).

The AES algorithm is used worldwide to protect top-secret data. This algorithm has low RAM requirements, which means your data is encrypted and decrypted within seconds.

About the master password

The master password is a single password that Kaspersky Password Manager uses to protect all your data, including other passwords. You create the master password during the initial setup of Kaspersky Password Manager. Every time you try to access the data vault, Kaspersky Password Manager prompts you for the master password. The application uses the master password to encrypt your data in the vault.

It is recommended that you set a master password that is at least eight characters long and contains uppercase and lowercase letters, digits, and special characters.

For security reasons, Kaspersky Password Manager doesn't store the master password on any of your devices or in cloud storage. We recommend that you memorize your master password, or write it down and keep it in a secure place, because it can't be restored or recovered if forgotten.

If you forget your master password, you will no longer be able to access your data. In this case, you will have to create a new vault and protect it with a new master password. Then you will be able to add new data to the vault.
