Calculating the number and configuration of update agents

The more client devices are present in a network, the more it needs update agents. We recommend that you not disable automatic assignment of update agents. When automatic assignment of update agents is enabled, Administration Server assigns update agents if the number of client devices is quite large and defines their configuration.

Using constantly enabled and available devices

If you plan to use certain specific devices as update agents (for example, exclusively assigned servers), you can opt out of using automatic assignment of update agents. In this case, make sure that the devices that you intend to assign update agents have sufficient volume of free disk space, are not shut down regularly, and Sleep mode is disabled on them.

If you plan to use a specially assigned device as an update agent, we recommend that you assign one update agent for a maximum of 1,000 client devices. If you plan to use a standard client device as an update agent, we recommend that you assign one update agent for a maximum of 100 devices. Exceeding the recommended number of client devices per one update agent causes an increased CPU load, which may affect the users’ performance.

Using devices that are regularly shut down or unavailable

If a device that has been assigned as update agent is shut down (or not available for some other cause), the managed devices connected to this update agent can access the Administration Server for updates.

If you plan to use devices that are regularly shut down or in Sleep mode as update agents, we recommend that you assign update agents as shown (see table below), in order to avoid excessive load on the Administration Server:
